Excellent question. We have a trademark policy that defines how third parties may use Apache marks. All Apache project names are trademarks, and the use of trademarks is one of the few restrictions that is explicitly called out in the Apache License. While third parties or free to use Apache project code for virtually any purpose, they may not</b< use the brands or trademarks of Apache without permission.

Most software companies understand trademarks, and are happy to comply if we ask them to attribute our brands. From the social aspect, what high tech company would want to mis-use an Apache project's brand, anyway? There are few software companies that have as large a market share as all Apache projects do, especially the http server, which has dominated more than half of the worldwide webserver market for over a decade.

Trademark policy: http://www.apache.org/foundation/marks/

Apache Project Branding Requirements: http://www.apache.org/foundation/marks/pmcs

I am curious about the statement " However it is important in these cases to ensure that the brand and reputation of the Apache project is not misused by third parties for their own purposes. "

While I agree that is a good idea, how do you go about enforcing that?

Ooooh - other key tips: bring an umbrella. This may mark you as a tourist - apparently many locals just invest in a good raincoat - but will keep you drier in the regular rain.

Also: I really recommend signing up for a CrowdVine profile. Click on the Connect link on the main ApacheCon site, and login (either with a username/pw, or Twitter or Facebook accounts). Then when you go through the schedule grid, you can add individual sessions to a personalized schedule - and get handy ics and calendar links.

Ha, that's why I started off with "this is a first of a series..."!

Members are effectively shareholders of the corporation itself. Any member may nominate people for membership; the membership then votes on nominees at our twice-yearly member's meetings. More basic information is available on the "How it Works" page: http://www.apache.org/foundation/how-it-works.html#structure

This is great! Lots of details for us procedural junkies.

One big missing for me is who and what are ASF Members and how do they come into being?

I look forward to your further offerings. -- Dennis

Sorry, I'm not the person to talk about re: git or infrastructure (unless you're looking for humor or jokes).

The issue with git is *not* strictly technical; there are organizational and social issues to using git in Apache top level projects that also need to be addressed. Note that you should definitely check out git.apache.org as well to see if that (read-only, however) helps your process at all.

unfortunately I can not make it to the US from Europe. But can you please(!!!) discuss the issue of GIT for the ASF? See also my recent mail to infra for reference:

Thank you!
