Shane’s Director Position Statement 2018

The ASF is holding its annual Member’s Meeting next week to elect a new board and a number of new Members to the ASF. I’m honored to have been nominated to stand for the board election, and I’m continuing my tradition of publicly posting my vision for Apache each year – including my 2017 board statement.

Please read on for my take on what’s important for the ASF’s future – or see my Q&A about where Apache is heading.

Shane’s Director Position Statement 2018

IF you would like a director who will:

  • Ensure the board and all officers to communicate more politely, respectfully, and clearly – both within private spaces and especially when communicating with PMCs and our communities.
  • Continue to document the many unwritten rules, best practices, and procedures at the ASF – and explain them clearly, and make them easy to find for newcomers and long-time members alike so that everyone can understand and participate fairly.
  • Provide links to source documents, and insist that proposals for improvements or objections to change are based on facts, documented principles, and goals (like the 5-year plan) that we all agree on.
  • Attend every board meeting, read your reports, and give thoughtful and helpful feedback to our PMCs only when needed, and be available as a resource to all our communities.

THEN I hope you’ll mark your first place vote for Shane (or second place, if first goes to a newcomer!).

Apache is doing great, but it needs your help to scale

I believe that the ASF continues to do amazingly well, and has stayed true to our core values of independent communities. Our success is more than our software and the many Apache communities: the many other Foundations and independent open source projects that have copied the Apache Way show the tremendous positive impact the ASF
has brought to the world.

The ASF’s biggest issue is scaling effectively: better supporting all our communities while helping them improve and follow the Apache Way. To do this we need to improve our documentation – so that everyone is working from the same playbook, and so it’s easy to understand and follow. We also need committed and engaged Members – to step in and actively help with corporate operations. And Incubator Mentors are critical – to make sure the 50+ podlings can grow into self-governing communities that truly follow the Apache Way, and are less likely to need help after graduation.

The two things we need from Apache Members (and committers too!) are – to serve as great mentors to the project communities they work with, and to step up doing the day-to-day operations work of shaping the future of the ASF as an organization spanning all Apache communities.

Want to know more about Shane?

See what else I’ve said about being a Director at the ASF in past years.

I regularly speak at open source conferences and post my slides and videos, and I write about the Apache Way.

I’ve attended every monthly board meeting (even when not a director) since 2009, except for the month my father passed away.

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to everyone stepping up to help make the ASF a great place for communities to work together positively!

Briefly, Shane is: a father and husband, a friend, a geek, a Member and director of the ASF, a baker, an ex-Loti, a BMW driver, a punny guy, a gamer, and lifelong resident within the 495 belt. Oh, and we have cats.
